QR has a strong commitment to the safety of our employees, contractors, passengers and the public. Currently our operational safety performance is better than at any other time in our history. There has not been a passenger fatality, resulting from train operations, for more than a decade.
Recording and investigation of all accidents is undertaken. Analysis trends are developed and continually assessed and monitored. To give purpose and meaning to this analysis, QR uses a strategic framework, agreed to each year by our safety regulator Queensland Transport.
Our strategic safety framework helps us understand our results from a macro perspective and enables realistic long-term evaluation criteria to be set. Those long-term criteria are also subject to international benchmarking, enabling continuous improvements and confirming best practice performance based on these four key risk principles:
- We do not accept deaths or injuries;
- We tolerate reasonable risks as part of our continuous improvement program;
- We only tolerate managed risks; and
- We do not accept intolerable risks.
