Passenger safety
In addition to QR standards that are designed to ensure the safety of passengers travelling on our trains, certain obligations are also placed on passengers. These include:
- Do not enter or leave moving trains;
- Only enter and leave railway property through a proper entrance or exit;
- Do not enter trains that are not designed for passengers, eg. freight trains;
- Do not ride on the outside of trains; and
- When on station platforms, remain behind the yellow safety line until the train has come to a complete stop.
Railway crossings / crossing the tracks
Railway tracks must be traversed using overhead footbridges, tunnels or subways and level crossings. Any other form of crossing is hazardous and illegal.
Using pushbikes, rollerblades, skate boards etc. on overhead bridges and platforms is not permitted as this can lead to dangerous situations when trains enter or leave the station.
At level crossings, vehicles must not enter the crossing if the red lights are flashing or there is a danger of the vehicle colliding with a train. Remember, depending on the type of train it can take up to 2 km to stop.
For more information visit the education centre's railway cross page.
Vandalism/trespassing
People must not enter railway premises that are not designated public areas, eg, the track, overhead structures.
People should never intend to damage the railway, eg. trespassing onto the track to place obstructions on the lines that could derail a train.
Electrified areas
QR's Brisbane Metropolitan Region and the main line from Brisbane to Rockhampton and most of the coal lines in Central Queensland are electrified at 25,000 Volts.
The public and passengers for their safety must only use designated areas such as platforms and recognised pedestrian crossings. In emergencies, the directions of QR or emergency services personnel must be followed.
It is illegal to trespass onto QR property. People must never climb over wagons as there is a risk of coming into contact with overhead electrical wires and items should never be thrown over the overhead wires.
