Name: Louise Current position: Apprentice Boilermaker - Brisbane Profile: Louise had thoughts of doing a trade but was hesitant to apply. It was a chance conversation with her uncle who encouraged her to consider applying to do a recognised trade. After a bit of thinking, Louise weighed up the pros and cons and realised what a great opportunity it was. "QR is a great company to work for and recognises that I have parenting responsibilities. If gives me the flexibility to meet the needs of my family and combine my work and training with a bit of juggling." QR has a commitment to all employees to balance their work and life and invests in continuing the development of all staff. "Once I have finished my apprenticeship, I will continue with more training revolving in and around my area of work, updating and furthering my skills. Who knows, one day I could be workshop manager or higher!!!".
Name: Anthony Current position: Apprentice Diesel Fitter - Toowoomba Profile: I have lived in Toowoomba my whole life. I finished year 12 at Harristown State High School, deferred from teaching at USQ, worked as a Storeman for one year, and decided to look for an apprenticeship. A career with QR caught my eye because of long term job security, challenging work environment, and the amount of extra-curricular training and programmes available. I enjoy working at QR because of the team I work in, the opportunity to move around the country, and the opportunity for future advancement, and also lots of things to do in such a large and ever expanding company with around 14 thousand employees.
Name: Michaela Current position: Apprentice Electrician - Brisbane Profile: "Learn and Earn" is what ran through Michaela's mind when she saw QR was advertising for apprentices. With a few years work experience already behind her, she knew she had nothing to lose by applying. As a second year Apprentice Electrician, Michaela works at Redbank Workshops in Brisbane maintaining electric trains and diesel locomotives, attending TAFE as required and also working off site to fill any gaps in her studies to become a fully qualified Electrician. "Getting an apprenticeship was a challenge and QR didn't care that I wasn't a school leaver" Michaela says. "While I didn't have any obvious experience to do the job, I had always wanted to do a trade. QR has given me the opportunity to learn something new and different, job security, tool allowances and support which eases the financial burden of retraining."
Name: Sam Current position: Apprentice Electrotechnology (ET) Communications - Brisbane Profile: I came to Australia approximately 12 years ago from Egypt. At the time, my priority was to learn English in order for me to start employment; which I did by enrolling at TAFE. I then went on to complete a Diploma of Electronics Engineering through Southbank TAFE before applying for a QR apprenticeship. The reason I wanted to work for QR was due to them offering their staff the opportunity to work in different areas across the organisation. I am currently in the 4th year of my apprenticeship. My apprenticeship is exciting and challenging as I have to use my head to solve any issues or problems that arise, and I get to learn a bit of everything.
Name: Melanie Current position: Apprentice Radio/Communication Technician - Townsville Profile: Quite simply, Melanie needed a job. After working for 15 years in retail and taking long service, Mel thought about what she really wanted - and that was a trade. New, exciting and something that would make her think! "Everyday there is something new to do, somewhere different to go. I also work with a lot of different types of people. Lots of travelling and seeing the countryside for work - it helps me pick my next inland holiday destination."
