QR's Noise Footprint
QR has completed a comprehensive project to determine the noise footprint from its operations across the Queensland rail network. The noise footprint was prepared through extensive noise modelling which predicted noise levels across the network. The modelling predictions were verified through random site measurements.
The noise footprint has provided QR with a comprehensive understanding of QR’s greatest noise risks, areas of impact and as such priorities for mitigation. A follow on from the project has been the development of QR’s Network Noise Management Plan which details a number of noise amelioration methods that are to be implemented across the network to gradually reduce operational noise impacts on the community. These measures include barriers, track upgrades and quieter rollingstock.
The benefits of this project are:
- QR can now identify the greatest noise risks, areas of impact and priorities for mitigation.
- QR can demonstrate a diligent management program through the Network Noise Management Plan of noise reduction initiatives to stakeholders.
- Implementation of the plan allows for progressive compliance with legislative requirements and community expectations.
- Implementation of the plan allows for continual review and upgrade to reflect changing conditions, expectations and requirements.
