Objectives
To manage land potentially impacted by our activities in an environmentally responsible manner and restrict practices which may result in land degradation and contamination.
Strategies
QR owns an extensive amount of land for rail corridor and associated operations throughout Queensland. The size and extent of this asset makes land preservation one of our high environmental priorities. To maintain our land, we have established procedures and associated documentation that focuses on the conservation and protection of land and soils.
We are continually monitoring and understanding our land systems. A number of key projects that we are undertaking to further improve our performance include:
Erosion and Sedimentation
- Through the Cooperative Research Centre for Railway Engineering and Technologies, we are monitoring research into erosion control, and where feasible we are trialling new research
- We continue to identify and implement appropriate controls at QR sites where sedimentation problems may be occurring as a result of QR activities
- We continue to identify and implement appropriate controls at QR sites where sedimentation problems may be occurring as a result of QR activities
Land Contamination
- We are registering all of our potentially contaminated sites onto QRs contaminated land register
- Through the Cooperative Research Centre for Railway Engineering and Technologies, we are monitoring research into remediation of contaminated land
- We continue to manage our projects and activities to minimise land contamination and pollution.
