QR has retained in operation a fleet of steam locomotives and wooden carriages for special operations, charters by enthusiast groups, and for corporate charters. Most weeks there are excursions in and around Brisbane so make sure you check out the latest calendar of events.
QR's moving history
At present the operating assets of QR are comprised of the following locomotives, however due to overhaul, or ongoing maintenance work not all are in service at the same time :
- A10 0-4-2 No. 6 (Nielson 1170/1865) - the oldest working steam locomotive in Australia
- AC16 2-8-2 No. 221A (Baldwin)
- C17 4-8-0 No. 974 (Walkers 511/1951) - currently undergoing major rebuilding work
- DD17 4-6-4 No. 1051 (Ipswich 210/1952)
- BB18¼ 4-6-2 No. 1079 (Walkers 547/1956)
- BB18¼ 4-6-2 No. 1089 (Walkers) - the last mainline steam locomotive built in Australia
- In the non operational category at present are:
- A10 0-4-2 No. 3 (Nielson 1214/1866)
- Beyer Garratt 4-8-2+2-8-4 No. 1009 (BP7349/1950)
- C17 4-8-0 No. 1000 (Walkers)
- PB15 4-6-0 No. 732 (Walkers 738/1926)

Heritage Volunteers
QR provides support and training to its own QR Heritage Volunteers. QR Heritage Volunteers are active across Queensland, with groups meeting regularly in Townsville, Rockhampton, Gladstone and Brisbane as well as smaller centres.
